Dog Cruelty.. Page 1 |
|
On Saturday evening 28/04/2007 we got a call from a very concerned member of the public about this dog, so the dog was brought out to us here in Cottage Rescue by a very nice man. We were sickened and saddened by what we saw, somebody Amputated his leg in this horrific manner! It was brutally removed at the joint in the elbow, he was very Dehydrated and Emaciated this poor dog was only skin and bone. This poor dog broke his leg for what-ever reason and was left for 3 months without treatment and it would appear in that time he was also starved and then about three weeks ago they then decided to hack it off and they even put a few stitches in . The pain and the agony this poor creature must have gone through in that time we cannot imagine but when you look into his eyes all you see is a hurt vacant look but we hope in time to bring the light back into those eyes and along with that trust! We decided to call him Champ (short of Champion) Which is what he is!! He had to wait until later in the week before he went to our Vet Marta to have the rest of his leg properly Amputated as he was too weak up and had to be fed up a bit, this poor dog was only a third of his proper body weight. This was an act of HORRIFIC CRUELTY and is one of the worst cases that we have ever witnessed here at the Rescue. We were delighted the way Champ came on and so was our Vet Marta, he came out of the operation extremely well and never looked back since. The morning after his Operation he only needed a little help to stand up and he is flying around since. |

A lot of our time and energy is put into answering calls on reported Cruelty Cases. We allow the person reporting to remain anonymous although we do like to have a phone number in case we have trouble finding the location of the animals in question. We answer reports of cruelty to Dogs, Cats, Horses or Ponies and even Farm Animals. It is a very hard and often times sad job, but helping the animals in desperate situations can be very rewarding. We have a good few Cruelty cases on our Cruelty pages but we will WARN you that some of the pics can be quite GRAPHIC……… |

It took us 4 days to catch this poor Lurcher with this badly broken leg! But we were successful in the end and he is safe here in the rescue and having a full Amputation of his leg on Tuesday 16th October 2007, |
|
Here is a pic of Conan as that is what we decided to call him.
His Mange has cleared up and his operation was a complete success and he is all waggy tails now but is still slightly hesitant in coming when called but that will change in time as he was living slightly feral for many months.
He is delighted to have the leg off as it was useless to him for many months and it only weighed him down.

“Bunty” came into us during the summer of 2006. She was found wandering and had obviously been dumped when she was no longer of any use for breeding. She had a lot of litters of puppies in her time. Bunty was suffering horribly from Mange that had been left untreated. She only had one small strip of hair down her back and her skin was so inflamed it appeared red and was hot to the touch. The poor girl spent all of her time scratching at her skin and was full of cuts from her toenails from the scratching.
After several weeks of special bathing, creams and treatment for the mange itself Bunty started looking better. The photo’s show her from the day she came in and then again in 3 short weeks. Isn’t the difference amazing? Bunty’s wonderful staffie personality was able to shine after she healed and could finally think of something other then the horrible itching. |

The owner of this animal refused to acknowledge that this dog was not living in proper conditions. He was living in his own filth, chained up in this dirty little bit of a yard and worse still the chain was all wrapped around a bit of iron and the dog could not get into the shed out of the bad weather that did not have any proper bedding, dirty water was provided and no evidence of food. This dog was removed from the owner and he was cleaned up and was later adopted out to a good home. |

|
The above dog was found as a result of a Cruelty Complaint, he had a tumour on his head that totally covered his eye as well. His owner decided to do right by him after we were called by a concerned member of the public. |

Poor Molly was abandoned and she wandered into nice people who contacted us and we picked her up, she was very smelly and her coat was in a terrible state, she found it difficult to walk on account of her mats which were very uncomfortable for her, so a groomer gave her a clip and a good wash and she is off to the vets next week to get Spayed and also have a dental done as she needs to get teeth out and also have them cleaned and she wore a nice coat to keep her warm as it was very cold that time of year because she would have missed the insulation of her very dirty coat. |
|
“Remmy” is a case that came to us in October of 2006. A person rang Hannah about a dog that was in terrible condition and bleeding that had wandered into their garden. When Hannah arrived she found him lying there bleeding from three separate gunshot wounds. He was rushed into Brittas Vet Clinic where he had to remain for 12 days. He had to go through 2 separate surgeries to repair the wounds. When Remmy was released from the Vet’s he went to a foster home and spent his recovery time in her house as he wasn’t in good enough shape yet to live in the kennels at the Rescue. He is a wonderfully sweet Border Collie and has come along in leaps and bounds. Sara at Wiccaways Border Collie Rescue in Wales offered him a space and we are so grateful to them for giving him a chance for a new life. He had spent several months in the fosters and he has since been homed, his new owners have contacted us and are very happy with him. |

Hope’s Story |
|
Hope came to us from a Dublin Pound and she was very ill, emaciated and full of mange and she also had a bad infection and muscle wastage which more than likely meant that she had given most of her life caged up. She had to have an emergency Spay as her womb was badly infected and she was also near having pups that were dead inside her and were also part of her problem and she was also very dehydrated and emaciated. She had to stay with our Vet Marta for a couple of nights on a drip and for a few days it was touch and go with her but she made a fantastic recovery and one month later she went over to the UK and was later homed. She captured a lot of hearts here in Ireland and there are a few people here to thank for saving this dog … Ann who was the lovely person that spotted her in the Dundalk Pound and also Judith who sponsored all her vets bills etc and to Jill who kept her in her home overnight the night before she came down to us. This dog was a pleasure to have here and was so thankful of everything done for her and all the time she was sick her tail was always wagging when she saw us. Have a lovely life Hope… You deserve it so much…. |

I got a call about this poor goat on 27th Jan 2009, she had been abandoned on the side of the road in this state, thin, hungry, fairly weak and hardly any hair on her body. She is a very gentle goat and very much the lady as she did not want to jump into the van so I had to make a step for her to hop in and she had the company of a Greyhound LOL. We think she has some sort of mange and is being treated for it so fingers crossed that she will do fine and improve. It is terrible to think of her like that in all the very bad cold frosty weather we are having for weeks. There is another goat here in the rescue as well and he was delighted to see her coming in but for obvious reasons we have to keep them separated LOL
Sadly on 05/02/2009 Nan-Nan took very ill and collapsed and we sadly had to get a vet out to her and she was humanly Put to Sleep, it was an awful shock to us as she was in great form at breakfast time. Rest in Peace Nan-Nan………. |

I got a call on the 21st Feb from lovely Security people at a local factory about an abandoned Lurcher, she is about 7/8 years old and was in an exhausted state and her tummy was sore where she may have been kicked and she is in great form now and even though she is a mature lady she is very playful with the other dogs. I got another call on the 23rd Feb from a nice man that found a Whippet/Lurcher type dog in a local town and she had a bad injury to her hip and pelvis, so I brought her over to Marta that evening and her hip had been dislocated for about 2/3 weeks and her pelvis was fractured as well but it was too late to put the hip back in place and she was so thin and dehydrated and we had to build her up for her operation. She had to go down to Cork to an Orthopaedic Surgeon and she had to have the femur head removed and she is now on kennel rest and hopefully the operation will be a success, she is a very cute little lady and will be up for adoption soon. Below are pics of this lady that we called Little Pekoes. She got a lovely home in the UK. |

Greyhound hit with hammer on head to kill him! |

|
This Greyhound was found at the end of November 2008 near Cashel by a kind couple who found him collapsed at the side of the road in a very weak state, they brought him to a local Vet who very rudely told them to bring him to a camp site and dump him but the couple brought him to a vet in the next town who examined him and stitched him up and gave him an antibiotic injection and he came in to us the following day. I later rang Kieran (vet) to confirm what I had suspected that somebody had hit him on the head with a hammer which he confirmed and a Stewart came from the IGB to examine him and take samples for DNA and he also confirmed that he had been hit on the head with a hammer. This is done to kill the dog by a sharp blow of a hammer to the head. We later named him Stanley after a company that make hammers and other tools. We have no idea who done this to him and his case is being investigated by the I.G.B. but we have heard nothing since they came to see him last November. We have no idea if he was dumped in this state near Cashel or if he ran away from the person who hit him with the hammer or how long he was wandering but he was very weak, dehydrated, hungry, disorientated and had bad infection in his wounds and a high temperature, he healed well but sadly 2 months later he started to have very bad convulsions and get disorientated and agitated & meds would not work on him so I had to make a very hard decision and get him put to sleep, which made me very sad.
So SHAME on the person that done this to him and SHAME on the local vet that refused to give him the medical help he so much needed. |
|
Stitches to his head He also had his leg ripped Relaxing on the couch but sad |

The above poor little Westie had an awful life before I rescued him, he had a skin condition and gave his life chained up with only bushes for shelter. He got a lovely home locally. |

Here he is after been to the vets who done a great repair job. |

Fionn fully recovered from his ordeal and now lives in Germany. |

|
Sweetness now renamed LOTTIE is very happy in her new home where she is living with cats (who boss her around) her new Mammy is very proud of her and loves her to bits as do all the customers that come into the shop as well. This was a real rags to riches story. |

|
This poor 11 week old German Shepherd puppy came into us in an awful state from Mange, we were unsure if she is a full G.S. until her hair began to grow back. Becks went over to the UK to Stevie when she was well and able to travel and she got renamed Kirana and here she is a couple of months later…. What a difference and what a Beauty so well done to Stevie and her gang. |

This poor Greyhound was found by a member of the public on the 15th October 2005. His ears had been hacked off as well as part of his scalp. The IGB came here and took DNA samples in hopes of finding the EVIL person/persons that done this to a poor innocent creature have never been found or prosecuted. Fionn was later homed to a lovely family in Germany.

|
On Sunday 25th of May 2008 we received a call about this poor creature from a very nice family who are also Greyhound people, they were very concerned about her, they tried their best to catch her but could not. So we set out after 8pm and we caught her with out too much effort as she was exhausted, starved, dehydrated and so scared and nervous, she screamed when we lifted her to put her into the van. She has given all day sleeping and she is on 4 small feeds a day consisting of a special diet and I treated her for mange and she is on antibiotics as well. This poor Whippet is only 1 year old but she has a very happy future ahead of her. |
|
Here are pic’s of SWEETNESS two weeks later. As you can see she was much brighter and more alert and she really coming along nicely and began to gain more confidence and GREAT NEWS she got booked for a home here in Ireland. |
|
We called this puppy ZIGGY and she was found on a busy round about with a very badly broken leg, she has since been homed and is very happy now in the UK. |
|
This wee 11 day old puppy came into us and was found abandoned by the side of the road and she is with Hannah and is being bottle fed. She was infested with Fleas when she came in. She is a very strong wee puppy and loves to get her surrogate Mum up in the middle of the night for a Bottle Feed. |
|
This little Lurcher puppy was only about 12 weeks old was brought to one of our Vets by kind members of the public who found her, she had to spend a night at the vets as she was totally dehydrated and was so emaciated.
She has since gone to a lovely home in the UK. |
|
The above dog came in to us on Wednesday 26th Nov 2008 and she came from Dunboyne Pound and you can see that she had mange pretty bad but we have treated her for this and you can see from the different pics how she has got better and she has even lost the sad look in her eyes and she is now a very cheeky little imp and she wears a nice warm coat to keep her warm in this extremely cold weather. She went off to the UK at the end of Jan 2009 to her new home and has the company of another lovely Whippet. |

Here are pics of a Boxer that came into me that had mange and was emaciated and you can see how he came on in two months here in rescue, he had gained lots of weight and you can notice how stronger he got. Amazing what a bit of food and a bit of T.L.C. can do. |

|
Update on Heidi. Heidi went off to live in the UK at the end of Jan 2009 and she was adopted by a lovely lady who came over with her friend to collect Heidi and bring her to her forever home by Ferry. Her new mom Pam took this pic of Heidi shortly after adopting her and re-named her Esme which I think is a lovely name. Don’t you just love to see follow up pics of these poor creatures that come into us in such bad condition and with the sad look in their eyes as if they have given up on life and it is times like this that I know I have mad the best decision in my life by caring for animals.
This what Rescue is all about! |

This lovely dog came in to us through another rescue down in Cork on the 20th Nov 2008 and he was left for 24 hours to die in a ditch after being in a RTA, so he is recovered here in the rescue and he had his lung drained twice by vets down in Cork, he done well here and was on kennel rest for 6 weeks to enable the Pelvis to heal. He has gone over to the UK to be homed. |
